As of July 1, 2015 the plan proposed by the federal government to reduce GHG emissions generated by coal fired electricity plants will be in place.
These plants represent approximately 11% of Canada's GHG emissions. With the new strategy both new and old electricity generation units at the end of their economic life will be regulated. After the first 21 years, a reduction of about 214 megatonnes of GHG, or the equivalent of removing 2.6 million personal vehicles per year from the road, will be achieved.
Air Quality and the betterment of public health will obviously follow if the expected results are reached.
