Betting on biofuels!
In December 15, 2010 the Government of Canada announced that gasoline must have an average renewable fuel content of 5 %.
“Support for renewable fuels is support for farmers, rural communities
and our economy. This is a vital step in generating new market
opportunities for our farmers ” - Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz.
The government has stated that this regulation is only one component of its Renewable Fuels Strategy. A requirement for 2 % renewable content in diesel fuel and heating oil, might be added to the current strategy once it is proven to be technically feasible.
It is estimated that with these two regulatory requirements and provincial regulations, greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by up to four megatonnes in 2012--this is the equivalent of taking one million vehicles off the road.
